RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Night Shift’ Dips In Finale, Fox Wins Night With MLB All-Star Game, ‘Extreme Weight Loss’ DropsYes, we are already that far into the summer that seasonal shows are having their finales. Last night it was NBC freshman drama The Night Shift (1.2/4) taking its turn. Having debuted on May 27 and renewed fairly quickly for a second season on July 1, the medical show dipped 8% last night among adults 18-49 compared with its July 8 episode. With battle memories and scars, the finale was down 25% from the 1.6 its premiere drew in late May. Night Shift’s lead-in was an America’s Got Talent (2.0/7) audition recap special. The two-hour show was down 23% from the last original AGT on Tuesdays, which got a 2.6.

85th MLB All Star GameOf course, the really big game of the night was the baseball’s All Star-Game (3.0/10) on Fox. Final numbers will come from Fox Sports later today, but in preliminary ratings, last night’s victory by the American League over the National League at Target Field in Minneapolis was a bit of a repeat of last year. The game itself was up 3% from the July 16, 2013 match-up. This being live sports, expect the numbers to be adjusted later today. Last year’s game ended up averaging a 6.9/12 in the final numbers. Needless to say, even with the preliminary ratings, Fox won the night in the demo and among total viewers with 10,95 million.

Batting up against the All-Star Game, ABC had a full primetime of originals with Extreme Weight Loss (0.9/3) and Celebrity Wife Swap (1.0/3). … Read More »

By | Wednesday July 9, 2014 @ 9:05am PDT

RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Night Shift’ Steady As NBC Wins Night, ‘Extreme Weight Loss’ GainsHeading into the debut of CBS’ Halle Berry sci-fi thriller Extant tonight and the whirlwind of the Emmy nominations announcement on Thursday, it was a quiet summer primetime on the Big 4 last night. As in previous weeks, an encore of America’s Got Talent (1.7/6) was the highest-rated show of the night. Following that was The Night Shift (1.3/7), NBC’s only new show of the night. Featuring a heavily armed guest appearance by Ray Donovan’s Steven Bauer, the penultimate episode of the first season of the medical drama slipped 7% from its July 1 show – which had been a big leap up from the week before. With a strong lead-in from AGT, Night Shift was the second-highest-rated show of the night among adults 18-49. Overall, NBC won Tuesday both among the key demo with a 1.6/5 rating and 7.416 million viewers.

ABC was the only network to have a full slate of originals with first Extreme Weight Loss (1.0/4) and then Celebrity Wife Swap (1.0/3). With former SNLer Joe Piscopo and The Brady Bunch’s Barry “Greg” Williams doing the honors on the latter, CWS was even with last week while its two-hour lead-in was up 11%.

Both CBS and Fox were all repeats with the latter’s NCIS encore proving the most-watched show of the night with 7.95 million viewers.

Ratings Rat Race: NBC’s ‘The Night Shift’ Clocks 25% Ratings Spike After Second-Season Renewal NewsThe same day NBC announced it had picked up The Night Shift for a second season, the hospital drama jumped 25% from last week – from a 1.2 to a 1.5 demo rating– solidifying its 10 PM timeslot dominance. It was the night’s second highest-rated program, behind only its lead-in, America’s Got Talent (2.6/9). Fueling The Night Shift, America’s Got Talent was even with its most recent original in the time period (a repeat aired in the slot last week), beating its combined competition in the demo, while inching up from same night last year’s 2.4 demo ratings. NBC wound up with a 2.2/8 for the primetime night, and 9.686 million viewers. Next best was CBS tied with ABC, at 0.9/3 for the night. CBS clocked 6.22 million viewers to ABC’s 3.139 mil. CBS relied on repeats of NCIS (1.0/4, 9.967 million viewers), NCIS: LA (0.8/3, 11.927 million ), and Person Of Interest (0.7/2, 4.849 million).
