Here’s the downright wacky trailer for the spoofy romantic comedy from Wet Hot American Summer director David Wain. Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler star in They Came Together, about a couple whose “story really is like a corny movie”, to quote the pic. Indeed it is, as the film has its way with rom-com cliches. Our heroes meet cute — his big Corporate Candy Company threatens to shut down her quirky indie candy shop — and it goes from there. Even the voice-over is in on the gag: “If you love love stories and if you love falling in love, then you will love this love story”. Cobie Smulders, Christopher Meloni, Max Greenfield, Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Jason Mantzoukas, Melanie Lynskey and Ed Helms co-star in the Lionsgate pic written by Wain and Michael Showalter. It premiered at Sundance and bows June 27 in select theaters and VOD. Have a look:
EXCLUSIVE: Before he returns for another season on The Office, Ed Helms will star opposite Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler in They Came Together, the David Wain-directed comedy that Wain and Michael Showalter wrote for Lionsgate. Helms is playing Eggbert, which is Poehler’s character’s love interest and accountant in this twisted take on the romantic comedy which Showalter’s producing. Poehler plays a small-business owner being crushed by a larger concern. The film shoots in July.
Helms will also do a cameo in We’re The Millers, the New Line comedy directed by Rawson Thurber and which stars Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis. Tucker Tooley, Vincent Newman, Happy Walters, and David Heyman are producing. Helms plays Brad, who is Sudekis’ boss and who may be hiding something nefarious and shady.
Helms then returns to The Office on July 30. He’ll shoot The Hangover 3 on September 16. He’s repped by CAA and Principato-Young.
EXCLUSIVE: Jason Mantzoukas has been set to join Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler in They Came Together, the David Wain-directed comedy at Lionsgate. Mantzoukas will play Rudd’s character’s best friend. Wain wrote the comedy with Michael Showalter, about a small business owner about to lose her shop to a big corporate development.
Mantzoukas, who stars in The League, was most recently seen opposite Sacha Baron Cohen and Anna Faris in The Dictator. He’s separately developing a feature at Imagine. He’s represented at UTA, Mosaic and Morris Yorn.
Max Greenfield has joined Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler in the cast of They Came Together. Greenfield, seen on Fox’s New Girl, will play the wayward couch surfing younger brother of Rudd’s character. David Wain directs the romantic comedy. Wain wrote the script with Michael Showalter. The duo last worked together on Wet Hot American Summer. Lionsgate is behind They Came Together. Showalter will produce. Wain will be the Executive Producer. Greenfield is repped by WME and Greenlight Management.
