“Of course we are all here for one reason, and that’s because Deadline Hollywood might tweet a link to a write-up about this and we all might get mentioned,” Ben Stiller joked in his very funny acceptance speech as the recipient of the 26th annual American Cinematheque Award on Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton. Friends and co-stars including Jennifer Aniston, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Laura Dern, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Stiller’s wife Christine Taylor among others offered tributes to the star-writer-director-producer-humanitarian the Cinematheque’s chairman Rick Nicita called a “Renaissance man of comedy” — to which Stiller said later, “I didn’t know you could be a Renaissance man of just one thing. FX’s drama Terriers ended its disappointing freshman run last night with 784,000 total viewers tuning in for the season finale, 405,000 of them in the adults 18-49 demographic. That was the third most-watched episode of the season and the fourth highest-rated in adults 18-49 despite the fact that the finale of the Shawn Ryan/Ted Griffin series had the show’s highest-rated lead to-date, the broadcast premiere of Tropic Thunder, which posted 1.1 million A18-49 in the 9:30-10PM half-hour leading to Terriers.

EXCLUSIVE: The Tropic Thunder gang is reuniting, this time on television. HBO has greenlighted Documental, a half-hour comedy pilot written and to be directed by Thunder co-writer/executive producer Justin Theroux. Theroux will star in the project with Thunder co-star, British comedian/writer/producer Steve Coogan. The two will executive produce with Thunder director/co-writer/producer Ben Stiller as well as Paul Simms, who serves as a consulting producer on the HBO comedy Bored to Death, and 3 Arts’ Michael Rotenberg and Nick Frenkel. Stiller’s producer partner Stuart Cornfeld at Red Hour Films, who also was a producer on Thunder, will serve as consultant on Documental, which had been in the works at HBO for awhile. The pilot, which will film in London, stars Theroux as a documentary filmmaker who tracks down his idol, an equally inept filmmaker (Coogan), and documents his return to his craft. The pickup comes on the heels of HBO’s pilot order last week to Armando Iannucci’s comedy Veep, which is talks with Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the lead. The network’s other recent pilots include Alan Ball’s All Signs of Death, the John Logan/Kathryn Bigelow drama Miraculous Year, which is in post-production, and the untitled Lena Dunham/JuddApatow comedy, which is gearing up for production. Actor/writer Theroux, repped by UTA and 3 Arts, most … Read More »
