2011 Comic-Con: ‘Snow White & Huntsman’

By | Saturday July 23, 2011 @ 7:48pm PDT

Deadline Comic-Con film correspondent Luke Y Thompson files:

The panel for this nearly-in-production fairy tale from Universal brought in some enthusiastic crowds. Director Rupert Sanders, producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel came out first. Joe Roth thought it was important to take a property everybody knows and has an emotional connection to, using new techniques. It’s  “backwards engineering” from the Tim Burton ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Patel claimed that if the brothers Grimm were alive today, they’d be proud of this movie. Bold claim. Roth says that this movie has the scale of LORD OF THE RINGS; dismisses concerns about similar movies by saying that nobody remembers Tom Hanks in BIG was the fifth body-swapping movie.

A reel was shown of Sanders’ commercials for CALL OF DUTY, Monster.com, and HALO 3. All clever and cinematic. He wanted to make a war  movie, but said SNOW WHITE  will have a large scale, and battles with exploding black knights. “It’s not a little girl sitting by a well followed by tweety birds”

Actors on the panel included: Sam Claflin (the dorky missionary from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4) as the prince, Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman, Charlize Theron as the Queen, Kristen Stewart as Snow White. Theron described her queen as a serial killer, grounded in reality, and that this movie takes the original concept, turns it … Read More »

Mighty Thor Chris Hemsworth To Star Opposite Kristen Stewart: Closes ‘Huntsman’ Role In Snow White Saga

EXCLUSIVE: Now that ‘Thor’ opened strongly around the world, its star Chris Hemsworth is one hot Aussie hunk. He’s just closed a deal for the good guy role opposite Twilight Saga starlet Kristen Stewart as the Huntsman in Snow White And The Huntsman which is Universal’s version of the fairy tale. Newcomer Hemsworth and his good looks allowed for heavy PR to drum up appeal for Thor among women with his shirtless clip a popular choice for talk shows with large female audiences. He’s repped by IFA talent management  and ROAR management partner and co-founder William Ward who talent-spotted Chris during one of the manager’s many scouting trips to Australia. Ward brought him to Los Angeles and really put him out there to casting directors and production executives. Chris read for the part of Thor but wasn’t given a test because a casting director had nixed him early on. Chris’ younger brother Liam (who’s also a ROAR client) then tested for the role of Thor, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige passed. Then, after a conversation with Ward (“You’ve got to reconsider Chris, he’s your guy”), Feige decided to let Chris read again. And once Marvel put him on tape, it was “Oh my god”. Hemsworth is in Joss Whedon’s UA-orphaned Cabin In The Woods which just got picked up by Lionsgate, is the lead in that Red Dawn remake, and played “George Kirk” in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot. Down under, he played “Kim Hyde” on 171 episodes of Home and Away, the successful Oz TV series … Read More »

Armie Hammer Set To Play Prince & Saoirse Ronan In Talks For Relativity’s Snow White

Mike Fleming

UPDATE: Relativity Media has confirmed Armie Hammer. Release is below.

EXCLUSIVE, 9:58 AM: Saoirse Ronan could be cast opposite Armie Hammer in Relativity’s The Brothers Grimm: Snow White that’s an revisionist adult retelling of the fairy tale from director Tarsem Singh. Armie Hammer, fresh off The Social Network, has closed a deal to play Prince Andrew Alcott in the pic. But Ronan (Atonement, and the upcoming Hanna) is still only “in discussions” for the title role. Julia Roberts already has been cast. It’s worth noting that Relativity plans to be in production first for a June 29th, 2012, release before Universal’s Snow White And The Huntsman starring Twilight saga superstar Kristen Stewart gets going and comes out December 21, 2012. Supposedly, Viggo Mortensen is shaky in that version.

(Beverly Hills, CA) March 26, 2011 – Relativity Media has closed a deal with The Social Network breakthrough star Armie Hammer to play Prince Andrew Alcott in its upcoming untitled Snow White feature, based on the Brothers Grimm story, directed by Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell).

Hammer joins Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts who was previously announced in the role of the Queen. Pre-production has begun, and principal photography will start in May. The theatrical release date is set for June 29, 2012.

Relativity’s Snow White, a retelling of one of the most beloved fables of all-time, will eschew the traditional story in
