EXCLUSIVE: After each of them has co-created a TBS series, Walt Becker (Wild Hogs) and Cheers alum Rob Long have teamed for a multi-camera comedy project, which has landed a pilot order at TBS. The network has greenlighted Do It Yourself, created and executive produced by Becker and Long and produced internally at Turner. It tells the story of Nick, a 20-something laid-off math teacher who finds himself thrust into the blue collar world when he gets a job at that most American of retail institutions: the big box home supply store. Nick quickly becomes the de facto leader of his band of misfit coworkers while also figuring out ways to redefine what it means to be a teacher. Becker and Michael LeSieur created TBS’ hourlong fraternity comedy series Glory Daze, which ran for one season. Long and Steve Byrne co-created TBS’ multi-camera comedy Sullivan & Son, which has been renewed for a second season. Also today, we broke the news that Becker has signed on to direct Sex On The First Date, a romantic comedy for Gold Circle Films.
EXCLUSIVE: Wild Hogs director Walt Becker has signed on to helm Sex On The First Date. Though the title might suggest otherwise, Sex is actually a romantic comedy. Gold Circle Films picked up the screenplay back in 2011 from first time writers Emma Jensen and Sall Grover. The film investigates the idea that having sex on the first date ruins any chance of a relationship really lasting. Gold Circle’s Paul Brooks is producing and Scott Neimeyer is executive producing. Walt Becker is repped by CAA and Luber Roklin Entertainment.
EXCLUSIVE: I hear Spike TV is finalizing a deal for a pilot order to an untitled comedy from writers and executive producers Jim & Steve Armogida (Grounded For Life) and executive producer Walt Becker (Wild Hogs). Jay Hayden, Steve Monroe and Ethan Embry have been cast as the leads in the pilot, which will be directed by Hitch helmer Andy Tenant. The project, aka Thunderballs, was one of six comedies on Spike’s development slate announced in October. Developed by the Armogidas at the Walt Becker Co., it follows three life-long friends (Hayden, Monroe, Embry) who comprise a beer-league bowling team called the Thunderballs. The show chronicles their efforts to balance their battle for supremacy at the lanes with their crazy personal and family lives. Production on the pilot is expected to begin May 7 in Spokane, Wash. Hayden is with Venture IAB and Precision.
Wild Hogs director Walt Becker, co-creator/executive producer of TBS’ first hourlong comedy series, Glory Daze, is back at the cable network with another hourlong comedy project, U-Boat. The buddy detective comedy was written on spec by former George Lopez executive producer Dave Caplan, who recently served as a consulting producer on another buddy crime show, TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles. Becker is executive producing U-boat with feature producers Bryan and Sean Furst (Daybreakers). Becker is attached to direct. (He also helmed the pilot for Glory Daze, which was picked up to series that ran for one season.) Like Becker, Caplan also has written a pilot for TBS before, an untitled 2008 half-hour comedy starring Valerie Bertinelli. Both are repped by CAA.
EXCLUSIVE: Ok, this is not a Ghost Whisperer revival but probably the next best thing for the die-hard fans of the cancelled CBS drama – a possible new series with Ghost Whisperer star Jennifer Love Hewitt. I hear Fox is in talks to pick up the project, a half-hour comedy described as a female Big Bang Theory. Wild Hogs director Walt Becker and Tiffany Paulsen (Nancy Drew) will be writing the script with Hewitt attached to star. The project would reunite Hewitt with Fox where she got her break as co-star on Party of Five.
CAA, William Morris and Paradigm are hot on this director’s trail. But I’m told CAA has been swarming him since Wild Hogs was big so Walt Becker is probably going there. Why isn’t Endeavor on this list? Because insiders say the tenpercentery sidelined him when he was cold after Van Wilder, and ICM helped him get back heat.
