Global Showbiz Briefs: Xavier Samuel Joins ‘Healing’, Gina Rinehart Miniseries

Xavier Samuel Set For Australian Drama ‘Healing’
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’s Xavier Samuel will co-star with Hugo Weaving and Don Hany in Healing, writer-director Craig Monahan’s drama which starts shooting in Victoria on February 18. Samuel, who’ll next be seen in Catherine Hardwicke’s thriller Plush, plays a young, vulnerable prisoner who gets involved in a rehabilitation program involving treating injured birds at a low-security prison farm run by Weaving’s Senior Officer Perry. Hany plays a long-term crim who has almost given up on life. The cast includes Jane Menelaus, Anthony Hayes, Mark Leonard Winter, Robert Taylor and Justine Clark. The producers are Tait Brady and Monahan’s PointBlank Pictures. Monahan co-wrote the script with Alison Nisselle. Andrew Lesnie is the DOP. Hot Trailer: ‘Drift’

Australian distributor Hopscotch has posted a trailer for the upcoming surf drama Drift that stars Sam Worthington, Myles Pollard, and Xavier Samuel. Wrekin Hill acquired North American rights to the movie in September with a view to an early 2013 release. Inspired by the true story of the founding of Aussie surf lines like Quiksilver and Billabong, Drift centers on two brothers who launch a backyard surf gear business but get caught up with a local drug dealer, threatening their family and their future. Morgan O’Neill and Ben Nott directed O’Neill’s screenplay.

Australia’s Benedict Samuel has a handful of credits to his name including the telemovie Underground: The Julian Assange Story, the TV soap Home And Away and the miniseries Paper Giants: The Birth Of Cleo. Now, the 24-year-old National Institute of Dramatic Art graduate has signed with WME, where he’ll be repped by Boomer Malkin. Benedict is the younger brother of Xavier Samuel, who’s making a name in Hollywood with roles in the final two Twilight sagas, Catherine Hardwicke’s Plush and Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous plus the Aussie movies Drift, Bait 3D and A Few Best Men. Benedict is repped by Management 360 and in Australia by United Management’s Natasha Harrison.
