Superman In Handcuffs Goes Viral As Studio Quietly Unveils ‘Man Of Steel’ One-Sheet

By NIKKI FINKE, Editor in Chief | Tuesday December 4, 2012 @ 3:18am PST

Warner Bros did not officially release to the media its new poster for next summer’s Man Of Steel. It didn’t have to. I’m told the one-sheet simply showed up on Facebook and immediately went viral. “Thank you to all of the fans who helped unlock this exclusive Man Of Steel reward in anticipation of The Dark Knight Rises December 4th release on DVD and Blu-ray.” Now the debate intensifies if this Superman reboot will be a big win or epic fail (contd):

Certainly the poster’s anti-hero vibe with Henry Cavill in puny handcuffs below huge biceps surprised fanboys. Military types appear to escort him somewhere sinister. And the trademark suit looks noirish but that’s just the way it’s lit. “The man who fights for truth, justice, and the American way — a criminal?” asked one media outlet. It’s all in keeping with what’s being called Zack Snyder‘s “seemingly art-film aspirations” seen in the teaser trailer under Christopher Nolan’s guidance. Though the pic doesn’t open until June 14th, its 2nd trailer will be attached to Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opening December 14th from MGM and Warner Bros. Also previewing will be 9 minutes of Paramount’s Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX 3D as well as the first full trailer in front of conventional theatrical showings.

After Getting Close On Several Big Jobs, Director Bryan Barber’s Taking His Next Meetings With ‘Gigantor’ In His Corner

By MIKE FLEMING JR | Thursday October 20, 2011 @ 4:27pm PDT
Mike Fleming

As fewer movies get made these days, the hardest thing for a director or a writer is just getting hired. Bryan Barber, who went from helming videos for bands like Outkast to making his feature debut with  the stars of that group on the 2006 Prohibition Era musical Idlewild, grew so tired of getting close and losing out on big directing jobs that he hunted and secured a film-centric property to improve his odds. After the lengthy courtship of an 86-year old voiceover artist who controlled the rights, Barber will go to his next studio meeting flanked by Gigantor, the giant flying robot star of the 60s Japanese cartoon import with a catchy theme song and a family-friendly premise. Barber controls the movie, merchandise and videogame rights, and will shop a $60 million live action film he calls Transformers meets Goonies. And guess who’ll be attached as director?

Considering that robots remain hot—Hasbro told shareholders this week that another Transformers is in the offing and a Real Steel sequel is also a possibility—Barber figures there should be interest in this story of a 12-year old boy who ends up with the controls to the giant weaponized world-saving robot. Barber hopes to take the same proactive route that allowed Tate Taylor to direct the summer sleeper hit The Help (he optioned the book before it had a publisher) and years ago got Frank Darabont his directing debut on The Shawshank Redemption (Darabont had written a superb script and controlled the book, and refused to step aside even when Rob Reiner and Tom Cruise were ready to re-team after A Few Good Men). ‘Xerxes’ Pic Down To Noam Murro And Jaume Collet-Serra For ’300′ Spinoff

Mike Fleming

EXCLUSIVE: The producers of the 300 spinoff known as Xerxes have retitled their film 300: Battle of Artemisia, and they have also narrowed their focus of potential directors to two: Noam Murro and Jaume Collet-Serra. The film, a spinoff to 300, is one that the film’s original director Zack Snyder was going to direct. That was until Warner Bros and producer Chris Nolan offered him Man of Steel, and Snyder and wife and producing partner Debra Snyder put Xerxes aside and moved on to rebooting the Superman franchise because Warner Bros needed it. The Snyders have been all over this director selection process. Snyder had written a script with his 300 cohort Kurt Johnstad. Like 300, it is based on a Frank Miller graphic novel that will be shot with the kind of stylized period green-screen action visuals that became the signature of 300 and helped the film gross $456 million worldwide. Xerxes was the Persian leader seen in 300. Miller’s graphic novel told the story of how Xerxes became this peculiar god-like entity. That mythology goes back to the death of his father, Darius, from injuries sustained at the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. Darius had told his son not to attack the Greeks because they can only be punished by a god, and so Xerxes tried to transform himself into a deity to gain revenge. The new pic’s produced by the Snyders, Mark Canton, Gianni Nunnari, Thomas Tull and Bernie Goldmann. The prime mover on the film has been Legendary Pictures, which made the original with Warner Bros and has taken the lead on several big-ticket pictures since Tull recapitalized his producing/financing company. That includes the Guillermo del Toro-directed Pacific Rim with Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba and the Alex Proyas-directed Paradise Lost with Bradley Cooper. Read More »

Sean Penn, Christian Bale Circle ‘The Last Photograph’ Along With Dark Castle

Mike Fleming

EXCLUSIVE: Sean Penn is circling The Last Photograph, and I’m told he plans to join Christian Bale in the Kurt Johnstad-scripted drama that will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev, director of the Swedish The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The film is moving from Warner Bros, and is in negotiations to move to Dark Castle, whose Joel Silver and Andrew Rona would board the project as producers and put up the financing. Zack and Deborah Snyder are producing with Hollywood Gang’s Gianni Nunnari.

The film came from an idea by Snyder, who set it up  at Warner Bros with his wife and Nunnari after they all worked together on 300. Set in Afghanistan, it is a timely drama that has elements of The Searchers and Taken. Bale plays a war correspondent who witnesses and is the only survivor of an attack on a group of Americans. Penn is circling the role of a retired ex-special ops soldier who comes to the scene determined to free a family member who has been kidnapped. The journalist agrees to help identify the kidnappers and travel the rough terrain to find them, in exchange for the story. The road brings them in confrontation with tribal regions of Afghanistan, and none of the diplomats will help. Read More »
